Arcoda lodge is pleased to present to you our latest addition ‘Super Natural’. He will be standing alongside our resident stallion, ‘Riarma’s Xpression’, who to date has cemented the success of our breeding program of producing quality New Zealand Sport Horses. Carrying Quarter Horse and Thoroughbred bloodlines, we have found ‘Riarma’s Xpresssion’ to cross very successfully with Thoroughbred, Warm blood, Arab and Stationbred lines, in fact very successfully with all breeds. The Quarter Horse is well known as the versatile, obliging breed and these qualities combined with the looks, athleticism, movement, nature and poise of ‘Riarma’s Xpresssion’, has enabled his offspring to perform successfully across all equestrian disciplines.
Our search to find another quality stallion that ticked all the required boxes to stand along side ‘Riarma’s Xpression’, lead us to Australia. The criteria we based our search on was the all important bloodlines, coupled with nature and temperament and something a little different colour wise to what was already available in New Zealand. We searched all winter and found the stunning two year old colt, ‘Super Natural’.
‘Super Natural’ is a Red-Dun Sabino Paint with Quarter Horse Bloodlines and we believe he displays all the qualities and traits of a quality stallion to compliment our already successful breeding programme. We also wanted a stallion with not a lot of body colour but with a lot of ‘bling’ as this gives the possibility of producing some very smart markings but can still produce a solid body colour. As you will see ‘Super Natural’ displays a huge amount of ‘bling’ but he also has the ability to produce body white as well. ‘Super Natural’ holds the dun gene and can also produce dilute colours like golden duns, red duns, sooty duns etc.
Another very important trait we looked for was that the stallion had to be very rideable. ‘Super Natural’ is by the registered Paint & Quarterhorse three times Reserve World Champion paint horse stallion, ‘Tribulation’. Imported from the USA, ‘Tribulation’ stands at 16.1 HH and has made a huge mark on Australia leaving some very rideable tall leggy progeny gracing the winners circle in all ridden displines. ‘Super Natural’ is out of the beautiful golden dun mare, ‘Up Close & Shameless’, who has won many major titles in Australia from a very young age. She is by the 3 times world champion ‘Just Shameless’, also a USA import. ‘Just Shameless’ is the paint stallion that put Australia on the world paint breeding scene, producing champions all over Australia. He has also left many quality broodmares to carry his line for future breeding. ‘Just Shameless’ was imported to New Zealand last year to stand at stud but sadly passed away in June.
With his superb temperament, colour traits and breeding lines, ‘Super Natural’ ticked all our required boxes and the deal was sealed. He started the long voyage to his new home in New Zealand and arrived in Christchurch, cool, calm and collected one year ago today.
‘Super Natural’ is a Red Dun Sabino paint stallion. Let’s explain this all to you – Most importantly, a paint breed horse is a breed of horse that carries only Quarterhorse, Thoroughbred and Paint bloodlines. This makes the breed the paint horse. The breed can not carry any other breed bloodlines, for example Arab, Warmblood, Standardbred etc. Then to confuse matters more, you can have solid colour paints which don’t have any body white past the line of the eye and/or above the knee or hock but are still classed as paint breed. Alternatively, you have the coloured breeds, for example, Pinto, Piebald, Skewbald etc. These horses can be any breed of horse, however, they must show the colour pattern characteristic.
Red Dun is a dilute gene. You will see by looking at ‘Super Natural’ he has a dark dorsal stipe down his spine, darker chestnut colour on his legs fading out as it gets further up his body, a dark mane & tail and zebra baring stripes on the tops of his legs. These are all characteristics of the Dun, with the Golden Dun being the most commonly seen in New Zealand. ‘Super Natural’ is the only Red Dun in the South Island and one of only two Red Dun Paints in New Zealand.
Sabino Paint is the dominant pattern of white splashes which appear to run vertically up the legs, underbelly and neck. Most importantly, the Sabino gene that ‘Super Natural’ carries is the Overo negative gene. This means that he can be breed to Overo mares without the worry of ever producing a lethal white syndrome foal. These foals will normally die within the first few hours of birth. Also with the Sabino gene, ‘Super Natural’ has the ability to produce foals with all the flashy chrome on the legs & face (highly sought after for the show ring!) but we all know breeding colour is like a lottery, sometimes you get it, sometimes you don’t!
‘Super Natural’ was competed at a limited number of shows last season with fabulous results. He displayed impeccable manners and was a true gentleman to have out in company. He has been lightly started under saddle over the winter and we have found him to be true to our requirements, displaying an amazing nature and attitude towards his work.
‘Super Natural’ is now 3 years old and will be standing at stud this season for the first time. He will be bred to a few of our own quality coloured and Thoroughbred mares with the resulting foals being available for sale nest season. He will also stand to a limited number of outside mares this season.
We believe this unique and special stallion will be a great asset to our breeding programme and will continue to keep our dream of producing top quality New Zealand Sport Horses advancing for the future. Please don't hesitate to call to come and meet our special boy, ‘Super Natural’, in person.
